![]() We get to hear him rip out some of his lightning fast tapping and sweeping, along with a few licks showing off his famous killswitch antics, not to mention his use of fast slap-and-pop licks. Some of Big B's Pikes are relatively restrained, with only basic soloing and riffing at work, but on this whole album Buckethead pulls out nearly all of his tricks. Whenever he would do this, the songs would seem poorly written and poorly constructed, however Gold Dragon is full of well done riffs and ideas that make for an intriguing and interesting listening experience it never gets boring. This is the bane of a lot of Buckethead's albums, as he has a tendency to throw a lot of overly experimental ideas into a song and leave it at that. This piece is better viewed as a well constructed jam session than an actual song, as it transitions quickly and frequently. Gold Dragon consists of a boatload of riffs and licks, even for a Buckethead album this is a lot. ![]() The Gold Dragon section of this Pike is definitely the best thing about this whole album, it is a whopping 24 minutes of awesomeness. The second part consists of the title track. There are two basic parts to this album, the first part is a piece called "Gold Dragon", which is split across six parts and takes up the majority of the album. ![]() It Smells Like Frogs is one of those many Pikes that are splendid, and it is one of my favorites. ![]() While if I were to recommend a few albums for an absolute beginner to start listening to, I would say A Real Diamond in the Rough, Pepper's Ghost, Shadows Between the Sky, maybe even Crime Slunk Scene or Colma, I would say a ton of these Pikes as well. The great thing about the Pike series is that the vast majority of his Pikes are all great displays of classic Big B guitar prowess, he is a master of not only technique, but feeling and the pikes are full of both of these. Ever since Big B started coming out with the Pike series, he has unleashed an absolute torrent of mostly quality material, but to someone who has no idea what Buckethead is capable of, one would have no idea where to start with all of his material. With Buckethead releasing so many Pikes within the last few years, it can be a bit difficult to start getting into this guy's stuff. ![]()
